Calls9 partnered with LegalTech in Leeds to host an event on Web3, Metaverse & Crypto event review. We welcomed members of the legal and tech communities at AvenueHQ and attended discussions and keynotes focusing on the rapidly expanding world of the Metaverse, exploring the implications of recent years' legal and technological developments, such as Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), Tokenisation, and Cryptocurrency.
The lineup of speakers included Tom Matusiak (Stewarts), Liam Angus (Barclays Eagle Labs), Adam Roney (Calls9), Mel Selvon Ellyard (Sure Valley Ventures), James Grice (Eversheds Sutherland), Leigh Sagar (New Square Chambers), Louise Wood (Leeds City Council) and Sherin Mathew (AI Tech UK).
Adam Roney, Founder and CEO of Calls9, took the audience on an exciting exploration through the development of the World Wide Web, from Web1 to Web3. Explaining the fundamental principles of decentralisation, ownership, self-sovereign identity and native payments, he demonstrated how the introduction of Web3 and the Metaverse is already transforming how we interact with the digital world.
Adam presented web3 examples from some of the most successful brands in the world, such as Starbucks Odyssey and Nike Swoosh. He then explained what the metaverse really means for the legal sector, providing examples of law firms such as Web3 Lawyers and Addleshaw Goddard, which currently deal with Web3 and the Metaverse cases. He provided the following definition for the metaverse, "it's a new way of experiencing content, communicating & collaborating with others", making the point that there is no single metaverse.
Adam acknowledged that the introduction of Web3 and the Metaverse into the legal sector would present a number of challenges and risks; however, he was adamant that the opportunities presented by the new technology far outweigh the potential risks.
Overall, it was an extremely informative and inspiring talk that left the audience with a greater appreciation for the transformative capabilities of Web3 and the Metaverse.
